Building Domain Value

READER Q: I want to build the value of my domains with traffic and page rank before I sell them. I would like to do that with blogging. My topics are guitar, creative writing, video games, music, art, and working out. Do you think these are topics that will get any traffic?

DOMAINARY A: Here's a blog that was started by a woman who wrote about two things - knitting and divorce: www.crazyauntpurl.com. Would 100 people want to read about knitting? Or divorce? Not at first. But she put her own personality and passion into it, and she got a few loyal followers. Today she has about 20,000 pageviews per day AND she got offered a publishing contract based on the content of her blog.

So the moral of this story is... focus on what you like the most and can have the most fun with, let your own unique personality shine, and let word of mouth work its internet magic!

Also, here's a way that you can build your blog and make money at the same time... Check out this PayPerPost website. Some really interesting opportunities here.

Where to buy cheap domains

READER Q: I need a cheap domain. Where can I get one for under $10?

DOMAINIARY A: The cheapest way to get a domain name right now is with Yahoo! From their home page, look for a link in the left column (below the fold) that says "domains." Here's where you can type in the domain name you want. Keep typing until you find one that's available. YOU WANT A .COM WEBSITE! No matter what you use it for, .com domains are the most valuable!

When you finally locate a name that's available and start the sign-up process, OPEN A NEW E-MAIL ACCOUNT WITH YAHOO. It doesn't matter if you already have a different e-mail account, open up a new one that is related to this domain you are puchasing. There are two reasons to open up a new e-mail related to this domain:
1) You can use this e-mail for correspondance related to this domain and it will make sense to your users
2) You can get the domain for $1.99. If you use an existing e-mail address, the domain will cost you $9.99.

When you're done you'll have a great domain and a corresponding e-mail address all for about 5 minutes of work and $1.99.

If you want to then set up a website, I recommend hosting at Yahoo! too. I have three different websites hosted at Yahoo! I like hosting there because:
1) They are user friendly and user-easy
2) I get listed in the Yahoo! directory pretty quickly
3) You pay month-to-month and don't have to make a year-long commitment to a web-hosting company who may end up being really crappy. (That has happened to me too many times!)
